THANH TIEN PAPER FLOWER
Thanh Tien Village in Phu Vang District, Thua Thien-Hue Province is well-known for its 400-year-old craft of making paper flowers, in Nguyen dynasty. By ancestor in the village, in Gia Long King time, he ordered that each town bring a special flower. In the court, there was a mandarin from Thanh Tien village who was at the Ministry of Rites, offering the King a five-colored flower with the meaning of “Tam cuong- Ngu thuong” (three social relationship, five cardinal virtues). Three flower in the middle present for Faithful – Pious – Gratitude. Especially, there is a big yellow or red flower in the middle present for the King, and others five flower for Humanity- Rites – Gratitude – Wisdom- Belief. After listening to the expaining the king encouraged Thanh Tien villager to make paper flowers to display, sell to the capital and popularize for everyone ..
Before, this kind of paper only use for worshiping, in nowadays it appeared in the artist life of Hue. The colorful flower not just have in Thanh Tien province but also every where especially in Tet holiday. Each occasion, although bought a lot of fresh flowers, but Hue people do not forget to buy some paper flowers to raise the spirit, grandparents and ancestors … These bright colors not only enhance the spiritual style, but also add unique features of Hue culture.
